This event information was updated Fri 09 Jul 2010.
27 May 2010: The event information offered in the block below assumes that a mutually-agreed-upon contract has been signed between the NWHA and other parties.  No such contract is in place as of this date.

16 Jun 2010: A proposed contract has been received and is being considered by the NWHA Board of Directors.

01 Jul 2010: Fort Stevens State Park OR has cancelled the Public Battle portion of this event, offering instead a "Living History"-only event.

06-09 Jul 2010: The NWHA Board of Directors voted to cancel the scheduled NWHA Public Battle/Living History Event scheduled for Fri-Sun 16-18 Jul 2010 at Ft Stevens State Park OR.  This action was taken for a number of reasons including, but not limited to, the following:

1. The lack of a contract defining the expectations and obligations of the NWHA, the Friends of Old Fort Stevens, and Fort Stevens State Park OR for any "Living History"-only event;

2. The lack of reliable information regarding the insurance requirements, potential liabilities, and expected indemnifications if such an event was held;

3. The lack of committed attendance by NWHA Members to such an event; and

4. The lack of an NWHA Event Coordinator for such an event.

Event information deleted 09 Jul 2010.

This is an NWHA Tactical Event. This event is closed to the Public.

NOTICE: On Wed 07 Oct 2009 Camp Rilea Range Control notified the NWHA Event Coordinator that they have cancelled our reservation for Training Area 1 on Sun 18 Oct. We still have Training Area 1 reserved for Sat 17 Oct. Apparently, a military unit (which always has priority over us) required the use of that Training Area.

Since we will have no opportunity for a tactical battle on Sun, the Event Fee for this NWHA Tactical Event is being reduced to a flat $30.00. That amount will cover the cost of range use for 1 day and billeting for up to 2 nights for each person attending.

Attendance: This is an NWHA private tactical event. Only the following may attend: NWHA Units and their one-time guests; members of reenacting organizations with which we have reciprocal agreements (CHG and PNWHG); and the WMHS German 2.SS-Panzer Division.

Scenarios: Will be based on small unit actions in the Arracourt Salient area of Eastern France where Allied units attempted to break through to the Westwall. Actual scenarios will be presented by Jim Eagar at the battle and line-up. For further information, please contact the Event Coordinator.

Impressions: Appropriate impressions for Allied and German forces for Northwestern Europe, circa October 1944.

Arrival Time: Friday, 16 October any time after 4 p.m.

Accommodations: We have three duplexes on base with a total of six bays. The modern barracks have 2 squad bays each billeting up to 12 persons, and have integrated restroom and shower facilities.

Line-Up and Inspections: 9:00 AM sharp both days in the parking lot. Have safety inspections completed and be ready to go. (Hint: Don’t start cooking breakfast at 8:30 a.m.)

Saturday Scenario: 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

Sunday Scenario: 9:00 am-11:00 am. CANCELLED

Meals: No meals will be provided unless your unit makes arrangements. If you don’t know assume you’re on your own. You will be able to cook on camping stoves outside the barracks, but not inside. Meals may also be taken at nearby restaurants in Warrenton and Astoria. Bring period rations for the field. There is no water in the field, so bring an adequate supply.

Appropriate Period Military Vehicles: Welcome.

Additional information will be posted as and if it becomes available.

The NWHA US 1st Infantry Division is proud to be the sponsor of this mid-war Mediterranean event at Biak TC near Redmond OR.

This event is open to all NWHA, PNWHG, and CHG members.

A planning briefing will be conducted Fri evening.

The tactical scenario is based upon the Allies' first blows against the soft underbelly of the Third Reich, which included the invasion of Sicily. This will be Day 2 and 3 of the Jul 1943 invasion. The Allies have landed and are massing their forces on the beach. Allied armor has not yet been deployed and is in the process of being unloaded. Meanwhile, Allied infantry units are probing and trying to hook up with their airborne counterparts who were scattered during a night drop all over the coutryside of southen Sicily.

The Axis forces, in the confusion of the night action by the airborne, are trying to determine the size and location of the invasion force and attempting to mass their forces for a counterattack to push the Allies back into the sea.

This event will be objective-oriented, in that both Axis and Allied units will have areas to defend and objectives to take. Areas in contention will include vital crossroads that lead to the beach town of Gela, Biscari Ridge that controls the main road, and a bridge that would allow the Germans to advance toward the beach. Aerial photos and maps will be provided in the operations folder to each Unit. We will also conduct night patrols to gather intelligence for the next day's operations, and there may be a brief nighttime firefight. However, this event is not a 24 hour tactical and the night operation will be concluded by 2200 hours

Biak TC is in Central Oregon near the town of Redmond. The battle area is a two square mile training area next to Highway 126 about two miles East of Redmond, but can be increased in size if necessary to accommodate the number of participants.

This is a bivouac event, so bring a warm sleeping bag as the nights can get chilly. The Central Oregon climate this time of year typically includes warm days and chilly nights. Stoves and fires will be subject to range fire regulations. Each unit needs to bring a couple of shovels and axes and water cans if planning a kitchen or camping fire. We will have a water buffalo for drinking, cooking, and fire purposes close to the encampments.

Authenticity is Mid-war. Allied units may wear roughout boots and use '44 fatigues.

Any questions please contact the Event Coordinator.

A printed copy of the NWHA Safety Policy will be provided to all units. There will be a mandatory safety check before any combatants take to the field.

Signs will be posted at the main gate and along the road to the camp area. Vehicles must be parked at the main gate or at designated areas near the camps.

Look forward to seeing you at the event

DUTY FIRST

S Sgt Lyle Cox

Part Two of a three-part training course designed and coordinated by the 5.Gebirgsjäger Division.

Rappelling/Rigging/Fieldcraft

This session includes learning how to rappel and demonstrations of mountain climbing equipment. Rigging of pack animals will be studied, as donkeys and horses were necessary on both sides to carry supplies. Finally, there will be some fieldcraft training including building various fighting positions, hasty river crossing, knots, mountain orientation, and period 12-kilometer Rucksack march. All materials will be provided. At the conclusion of this phase, the Jaeger Sleeve Badge will be awarded.

We have been approved to rappel and the pack animals are confirmed for training on Saturday night.

Location will be a cabin on Wind River. Built in 1931, it still runs on gas (no electricity). Bring a sleeping bag, but there will be plenty of room. It has a hot shower, large deck and is literally 15 ft (5m) from the river. It also happens to be at the bottom of the trail we will be hiking. There is a full kitchen with stove and refrigerator, plus a gas grill outside. This should work well because there are no restaurants within 20 miles. It has a huge stone fireplace with benches outside, and room to do the training. We can also do the horse training there.

All necessary equipment has been acquired or reserved.

The menu for the weekend will be:

Friday
    Soup
    Cold cuts
    Bread
    Coffee
    Cheese

Breakfast all days
    Cold cuts
    Butter
    Boiled eggs
    Cheese
    Porridge

Supper
Perogies fried with onions and sausages, and sour cream
Tomato salad with olive oil, pepper, and basil vinegar salad dressing
    Two bottles of Italian Chianti.
    Coffee
    Dessert

(Chuck wanted the menu to have a bit of a Tyrolean flair.)

Open to all reenactors.
Certificate awarded following successful completion.
Part Three will be scheduled in the future.

This is a public event.

Free admission to Evergreen Aviation Museum for all registered reenactors for both event days.

As currently scheduled, the event will run from 9am-5pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Friday is reserved for set-up of the bivouac area and public displays. Battlefield prep (trenches, foxholes, etc.) will commence on Friday and must be completed by 0900 Saturday morning. We may dig foxholes in our display areas if they are filled in and re-capped with the grass that we removed. We will be encamped in the oak grove to the north of the main museum building and we will have many trees around us. It should be a nice setting.

The scheduled Public Battles will occur on Saturday and Sunday. The Normandy battle will be at 10:30am daily, and the Russian Front battle will occur at 2:00pm daily. These times have been coordinated with EAM. Smaller groups of reenactors are free to skirmish on the battlefield at times that do not clash with pre-scheduled public battles. A published schedule with detailed information will be available 2-3 weeks prior to the event. Stay posted for updates.

Checked-in reenactors will be hand-stamped. The handstamp will be available only at the event check-in point, and will be the means of entitling the reenactor to free admission to the Museum. A colored card will also be issued at check-in. These cards will be checked prior to each battle to ensure that only known, registered reenactors will be in the battlefield area.

We are anticipating that vendors will be present at this event, including Cyrus Lee of Soldat FHQ.

Members in good standing of the Pacific Northwest Historical Group (PNWHG) and the California Historical Group (CHG) are cordially invited to join us as Guest Members at this event.

Location: Camp Rilea OR

Billeting: Barracks
Sponsored By: NWHA German 11. Panzer Division

Every soldier of every nation starts to think about the future as the final stages of the war approach the southern German border.

German soldiers think about surviving by surrendering to the Americans, especially those on the Russian front. The Feldgendarmerie, the dreaded "Chain Dogs," attempt to maintain order through flying Courts Martial, with summary judgment being imposed immediately. Waffen-SS units resist fanatically, and seek to prevent surrender of other German units. German civilians attempt to declare their hometown an "Open City" by hanging sheets from every building. Police and other military units often resort to threats and violence to get the sheets taken down and the roadblocks re-established. Party officials leave town in disgrace. Chaos reigns supreme as resistance seems futile and only ensures more death and destruction. The German Landser finds himself in the crossfire, with hostile citizens and armed American troops adding to the fear of death from the Military Police or SS.

For the American GI, caution takes over after the final counterattacks beat back the failed German Ardennes offensive. Replacements are few, ammunition shortages common, units remain in the line though depleted and battle-worn. German resistance is sporadic and unpredictable.

No one wants to be the final casualty. Most want to return home healthy and whole. Advances are rapid, with little or no flank support. Headquarters makes impossible requests no longer based in reality on both sides. Meanwhile the individual soldier must make life or death decisions for himself, his comrades, and his foes.

The February 2006 NWHA tactical event at Camp Rilea will attempt to recreate this chaotic state of affairs. Individual units will receive written orders from higher headquarters and then attempt to interpret and implement them to the best of their commanders' understanding.

We will be in the duplex barracks, and will fight on the northern end of the base. Event fees will be $30.00 for both days, and will be waived for any member bringing a period correct tactical vehicle. There will be an NWHA Board meeting Saturday night. Late war impressions are encouraged. For further information contact your unit commander.

Camp Rilea is an active Oregon National Guard facility providing training grounds for both regular and Guard units from across the United States and Canada. Located some five miles south of Ft. Stevens and some five miles southwest of Astoria, it has ample space and comfortable barracks. The modern barracks have 2 squad bays each billeting up to 12 persons, and have integrated restroom and shower facilities. The WWII-era barracks are a taste of the way things were done 60 years ago, all with restrooms, some with showers. The training grounds here include beach, heavy woods, and fields (criss-crossed with dirt roads and trails), as well as a MOUT 'village' for urban training and obstacle courses. These excellent facilities have been made available for many of our tactical events.

Camp Withycombe OR is located just East of I-205 in Clackamas (South-East of Clackamas Town Center) near Portland, OR. A Disaster Recovery Center is operated in Camp Withycombe jointly by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Oregon Emergency Management. The Oregon State Defense Force (OSDF) is headquartered at Camp Withycombe. Oregon Military Museum at Camp Withycombe provides military historical displays of events concerning the Oregon National Army and Air Guard and the Oregon citizen members of all the National Military Departments.

Camp Withycombe was determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office in July 1994. Camp Withycombe, located at the foot of Mt Talbert southeast of Portland, is a collection of National Defense facilities dating from 1903 to the late 1930s. Camp Withycombe has served as a rifle range and training ground for the Oregon National Guard for more than 80 years. The original 234-acre parcel of land was first named Camp Benson after Governor Frank W. Benson, but was later renamed Camp Withycombe during World War I for James Withycombe, the Governor during that time.

Significant contributing elements of the camp include the rifle range, a 24-station, 500-yard facility, which first opened in 1909, and several buildings constructed prior to 1940: the Mess Hall, ca. 1912 (Bldg 200), the Storage Building, 1910 (Bldg 206), the Feed Barn, 1910 (Bldg 305), two Storage Buildings, 1910 (Bldgs 308, 310), the Supply Building, 1920 (Bldg 450), a Barn, ca. 1903 (Bldg 525), and the Adjutant General's House, built in the Colonial Style in 1938, constructed by the WPA.

Camp Withycombe is significant as the site of the earliest organized firing range in the state and as a developed landscape with various architectural features, all with the common theme of National Defense. Camp Withycombe has served as a rifle range and training ground for the Oregon National Guard for more than 80 years. Land for the camp was purchased by the U.S. Government in the Spring of 1909 and the range opened for the season on May 15, 1909.

Commonly referred to as the Clackamas Rifle Range, the Camp Withycombe rifle range is one of the oldest National Defense ranges in the western part of the United States. At the time it was constructed, the Camp Withycombe rifle range was described as the most "thoroughly modern and fully equipped rifle range available". The site was hailed as "ideal for the purposes of rifle practice and competitions." It was the first on the West Coast to employ a 1000 to 1500-foot shooting range and one of the first in the country with this feature. At that time only the newest service rifles had a shooting range of this distance. The layout of the range was also carefully considered as wind and sun played an important part in target practice. Mt Talbert, to the east and north, provided some protection against the northwest wind thus minimizing any fishtailing effects. The mountain also provided a safe backdrop for the range and the flat land at the base of the mountain provided an ideal flat firing range. The range was cited as having the "perfect environment" upon its opening.

Troops from all over the state came to the town of Clackamas by the Southern Pacific Railroad and then walked to the camp where they stayed for seasonal rifle practice. The range was also the site of annual state competitions. By 1913, the Oregon Infantry placed third out of 43 in the competition, a success which was attributed to the excellent rifle range facility at Camp Withycombe.

During the early years, camp personnel were housed in tents. It was not until the Depression that many of the building were constructed with the help of the Work Projects Administration. However, some of the buildings (the storage shed and feed barn) were previously on the site prior to the government's purchase and subsequently utilized by the National Guard.

During World War I, in addition to its function as a rifle range, the camp was used to receive enlistees and also was the site where troops were mobilized at the start of the war. It served as an important headquarters for the National Guard during World War I, serving as a central supply depot and training center for the Guard. During the subsequent years, newer buildings were constructed to facilitate the needs of the Guard.

During the 1930s the camp developed as a supply depot for the National Guard. Some of the buildings on the camp property, such as the Adjutant General's house (1938), were built by the WPA during this period.

The camp still serves as a training facility, supply depot, and equipment repair facility for the National Guard. Until recently, the rifle range was regularly used for target practice by various agencies such as the State Police. Though the rifle range is now closed due to deteriorated baffles and complaints from nearby residential areas, the range retains its original layout with modifications only in the structures which shelter the close range target area. A portion of a rock retaining wall and a stone drinking foundation are located near the range, dating from the historic period.
