Living History Weekend

Date: August 2002
Location: Ft. Stevens, Oregon

The NHWA held a very successfully WWII living history weekend at the historic Ft. Stevens on the Oregon coast. At the mouth of the Columbia River, Ft. Stevens is famous as the location where a Japanese submarine surfaced and fired on during WWII. The batteries have now become a state park which attracts a number of campers and visitors.

Briefing for public battle participants

After a popular display last year the club was invited to host a similar weekend in 2002. All of the club's units participated in the two-day event, working together to build living history displays and putting on several daily public battles.

The end of a public battle.

Units pitched camps and set up display tables of equipment, along with rooms and camps prepared in period style. Both the park and the club made efforts to advertise the event, and word got out. Staffed by club members in uniform, the displays were visited by hundreds of interested people, with crowds larger than the previous year.

Door prizes were given to club members who attended. The prizes were period and reproduction WWII items donated by club members for the occasion. In addition a $50 cash prize was awarded to the German and Allied units who were voted to have the best over-all public display. The awards went to the German 11 Panzer Division and the British 3rd Parachute Brigade.

Fritz learns to fly.

Three public battles were held over the weekend for the crowds, with park staff dressed in WWII uniforms there to talk about the tactics and history of the war. Once again the pyrotechnics of the 6 Fallschirmjaegers stole the show. This year trip wires were used to time airburst mortar rounds and an explosion from a satchel charge. Once again Fritz the dummy was sent to Valhalla at the end of each battle. We're happy to report he is now back home in Washington recovering from his wounds, get well notes can be emailed to 6fjr@nwha.org.

The event was a big success for the club, helping to get our name and message out to the public and drawing in new members. Living history weekends like this really help both the park and the club, working to build our relationship and ensuring our ability to reenact in the future on the great sites of Oregon's coast.

Lorraine, 1944

Sponsored By:
2. SS Division 'Das Reich' (NWHA)

Date: November 23rd & 24th, 2002
Location: Camp Rilea, Oregon
Contact: dasreich@nwha.org

With the German defeat in Normandy, the Allied advance had to be stopped. Hitler planned a counter attack of Patton's Third Army to stop the advance. However, the Allies had plans of their own; To capture the key port of Antwerp. The two Armies clashed in the small town of Arracourt in September 18-23. In the end, the counter attack was halted and the Panzer units had been crushed. This battle exhausted Patton's limited resources and the thrust into Germany was pre-empted.

Lorraine, 1944

Nov 23-24 "Das Reich" will sponsor this event at Camp Rilea. Standard battle fee of $30. Billeting will be in the camp barracks. We will use similar combat rules from the July event. Unit commanders will be given orders and maps for several planned scenarios. The base combat town will be used if available.

Our friends from CA the "1SS" will be transporting several German vehicles to help support this event and help with the counter attack to save the Reich!

This event is closed to the public. If you would like to attend as a guest please see our Registration letter on the main web site under the 'Events' page. Print the letter and coordinate with the unit that best matches your impression.

Please remember that the training needs of Rilea could change with little notice, and the barracks reservation could be cancelled. Bring gear for camping to be safe.

For further information about this event contact dasreich@nwha.org or your unit commander.
